Seattle Public Schools Define Racism

The Seattle Public School District has done the public a service to define racism, as only a big city school district could. Full disclosure, my son, Andrew, goes to school in the Seattle Public School district. Andrew's mother teaches in a Seattle area public school district. A few Highlights.
Definitions of Racism

Racism:
The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites). The subordination is supported by the actions of individuals, cultural norms and values, and the institutional structures and practices of society.

Now lets stop here for a minute to discuss. Now I always thought that racism was treating someone different because of their race but the way I read this definition, only whitey can be a racist. I also find it odd that Asians are included in the "racial groups who have relatively little social power" category. The Seattle School District seems to pick and choose when to group Asians with traditional minorities, such as here, and when to not include them in minority groups, such as when they want statistics to show the need for race based quotas because minorities are lagging behind academically. Lets continue:

Cultural Racism:
Those aspects of society that overtly and covertly attribute value and normality to white people and Whiteness, and devalue, stereotype, and label people of color as "other", different, less than, or render them invisible. Examples of these norms include defining white skin tones as nude or flesh colored, having a future time orientation, emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology, defining one form of English as standard, and identifying only Whites as great writers or composers.

What?

You know what I think racism is? Racism is when a school district knowingly allows a segregated school to continue to exist that are not properly educating its students. Lets take a look at 3 of Seattle Public Schools. These are all K-8 schools, one of them does not seem to be doing as good a job as the others.

Pathfinders, an alternative K-8 school located in West Seattle.
59% white, 10% African American, 6% Asian, 11% Hispanic and 14% Native American.
7th and 8th grade WASL scores math 33%, reading 57%, writing 50% and science 25%
.
School Motto "Pathfinder K-8 educates students to become passionate, lifelong learners, respecting themselves, others and the environment."

Salmon Bay, a K-8 school located in Ballard.
70% white, 6% African American, 10% Asian, 10% Hispanic and 5% Native American.
7th and 8th grade WASL scores math 76%, reading 83%, writing 73% and science 71%
.
Mission Statement "Building small learning communities--connecting every child."

African American Academy, a K-8 school located in the Beacon Hill area.
4% white, 92% African American, 1% Asian, 2% Hispanic and 1% Native American.
7th and 8th grade WASL scores math 17%, reading 47%, writing 19% and science 4%
.
Mission Statement "The mission of the African American Academy is to meet the needs of African American and all children, providing them with an academic and African-centered education: nurturing them, in order to meet their emotional needs, while helping them to develop positive social and cultural skills which will enable them to become leaders of tomorrow."

Now which of these schools will give its student the highest chance for success in the city of Seattle, a city that is 70% white, 8% African American, 1% Native American, 13% Asian and 5% Hispanic. I will give you 3 guesses.

Update

I usually do not reply to comments but I can not let playin' possum's comments go unchallenged.

I am assuming the “cherry pick” comment was related to the schools I selected as examples. First of all, the 3 examples were not cherry picked. The purpose was to point out how the Seattle Public School District is doing a disservice to an entire school full of overwhelmingly African American students. I went to the Seattle Public Schools web page and randomly picked 2 schools, from the K-8 schools, so that I could as best possible compare apples to apples with the performance of the African American Academy. It would have been hard to compare 7th and 8th grade WASL scores from a non K-8 elementary school. I have no connection to any of the schools, I do not know anyone who goes to any of the schools. I do not even know where any of the schools are located outside the general description I used from the web pages.

Now if the “cherry pick” comment was about me selecting parts of the racism definition, the commentator Erik was correct when he stated that “I think that he was just pointing out the two most absurd definitions“. In addition, it was late in the evening and I try not to post really, really long rambling posts. I know I tend not to read long posts and I figure others do the same.

As far as the definition of racism being widely accepted as only whites oppressing non whites, I would strongly disagree. If a white child is beaten up by a group of non white children, solely because the child is white and if derogatory language was used in the attack, I would think most reasonable people would say that was a racist act.

In fact Wikipedia, the online community encyclopedia, does not think racism is limited to whites oppressing non whites.

Racism refers to a belief system that humans can be separated into various groups based on physical attributes and that these groupings determine cultural or individual achievement. This can lead to prejudice against individuals based on a perceived or ascribed "race". This racist outlook in assuming that the human species can be meaningfully divided into races, often breeds ignorance, fear and hostility towards people. Racism often includes the belief that people of different races differ in aptitudes and characteristics. Some individuals who use this concept of racial categories, believe that different races can be placed on a ranked, hierarchical, scale. The term race plus the suffix ism added refers to a "meme" that the human species can be divided into various groups based on physical characteristics such as skin color and hair color, as well as cultural differences. By definition one who practices racism is known as a racist.

Traditional dictionary definitions also do not specify specific races.
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Finally, I need to make sure I am clear about what my issue really is because I really did not address it in the original post. The Seattle Public School District created the African American Academy to lessen the achievement gap between white students and African American students.
In January of 1990, the African American Academy was officially "born" as one of ten school programs, approved by the Seattle Public School Board, to eliminate disproportionality and increase academic achievement. In the fall of 1991, after several months of intense planning by an Oversight Committee of parents, teachers, and community people, the African American Academy opened as a Kindergarten through Grade 5 elementary school with an enrollment of 234 students. It has since grown to some 400 scholars in grades K-8.

The achievement gap does not appear to have been bridged based on the test scores from the school. It would be interesting to compare what the gap is between African American students who are not in the African American Academy compared to those who are in the African American Academy. I know the district posts test scores on the internet. I do not know if scores are broken down by race by school. If they are, I have not been able to find them as of yet. The real issue though is regardless of the gap, is a segregated school teaching an Afro Centric curriculum to students who live in Seattle, a city that is 10% African American appropriate? To me, the existence of the African American Academy seems to be saying that black kids can not learn unless surrounded by black kids and learning about African history and culture. To me, that is racist. I think all kids are capable of learning despite the amount of pigment in their skin. Now if you ask teachers what is the number one factor in predicting a kids success, they will probably say parental involvement and make no mistake about it, two parents involved is better than one. If you take a look at the eight K-8 schools and see the percentages of students not living with both parents, African American Academy leads the list with 76%. Madrona is 2nd with 63%, all other schools are under 47%. Single parent families, kids born out of wedlock, that to me is the number one issue that is negatively affecting the African American community today and until a solution is found for that, do not expect the achievement gap to close.

From Seattle's definitions:

"Passive Racism:

Beliefs, attitudes, and actions that contribute to the maintenance of racism, without openly advocating violence or oppression. The conscious or unconscious maintenance of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that support the system of racism, racial prejudice and racial dominance."

Based on that definition, your examples, being necessarily cherry-picked, are racist... As is the whole post...

BTW, that first definition you list is pretty much accepted as correct... It's the one "contribution" the poverty pimps have made to the American dialouge...

By their definition, anti-Semitism would NOT qualify as racism.

Either SPS is really stoopid or very confident that their view of reality is generally accepted. I find their little glossary completely distasteful. It is one of the most blatantly bigoted things I have ever read.

I'm white. Since that equates with racist, I should go buy a KKK uniform. Didn't know I was a member of that club until Seattle schools pointed it out to me.

Everyone is wrong. Wikipedia is right and takes a pretty even view:

"OKLookit, People,

We each of us are expected to hack it, do the work, loosen up and function.

Nobody cares how much melanin you got in your skin, what shape your nose is, what language your grandfather spoke.

There's a planet here to work with, and a universe out there for the taking. If we don't take it, something else will, and we won't be here any more. Stupid squabbles won't matter any more.

So go take it.

Your stupid little differences just get in the way.

Some variant of this message needs to be said to every classroom every day. Without softening. Kids need to get that they have a purpose, they have a frontier. Otherwise, they fall into this petty little squabbling pattern, arguing over every little thing. The adults are even worse.

They're mentally locked into a closed system, and they're living in an open system. That's a recipe for getting blindsided.

Comments are awaited -- I'll review and maybe address them in the morning -- and perhaps amplify this theme a bit: that we're maybe not inspiring - awakening - opening up kids to the larger world.

The Seattle School District racism is a problem throughout Washington Public Schools. Please view website http://www.thefactsaboutwaedreform.org

The website has public documents that show how the current reform movement is racist and links the racism to the current Administration that is leading the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. You will find contracts, federal grant documents, letters and other disturbing material that gives evidence to the racist agenda.

I first heard the news that only whites can be racist at a workshop I attended in the mid-80's. Blacks, according to the black facilitators (from New Orleans as I recall)couldn't be racist because they were oppressed.

This meme has grown to the point that the Episcopal Church in the US has mandated racism workshops for every single congregation in every single diocese in the country. That's why I call it the Incredibly Shrinking Church. They ought to start opening some Episcopal schools in the barrios and ghettoes and give poor families some choices. Instead we have AIDS money, and Racism money, and other "elite" issues.

Here's an essay I wrote after receiving our parish notice for the workshop...it's in response to some priest in our diocesan newspaper beating his lily-white breast for his racist sins:

No More Mea Culpas for Breathing While White

This garbage is killing our kids.

The Seattle school district has a nasty, insane message for budding entrepreneurs, civil libertarians, and free market conservatives: your belief in individual rights or individual initiative brands you as a racist.

The Seattle Public Schools define individualism as a form of “cultural racism,” declaring that “cultural racism” includes “emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology.”

On their web site, they also define racism to include stereotypically white traits such as “future time orientation,” which is a pejorative word used for studying and “acting white” to reap future advancement, rather than devoting one’s energy to being hip or cool and enjoying the moment.

It is racist for the Seattle schools to stereotype achievement as a “white” characteristic. Plenty of non-whites study and exercise self-discipline. No school system should disparage student studying and achievement. That is at odds with a school system’s basic educational mission.

The Seattle schools also declare “equality” of treatment to be a form of racially-biased assimilation, favoring instead affirmative action in the form of “unequal treatment for those who have been disadvantaged over time,” to give historically oppressed groups “special programs and benefits.”

The “equality” they deride – the notion that “people who are the same in those respects relevant to how they are treated in those circumstances should receive the same treatment” – is the same notion of equal treatment whose infringement is the basis for a disparate-treatment discrimination lawsuit under the federal civil rights laws, under U.S. Supreme Court precedent.

In an apparent conflict with federal law, the Seattle schools deny that whites can be the victims of racism. They define racism as limited to acts against groups that have “little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites).”

By contrast, federal appeals courts routinely rule against institutions that fire or harass white employees, recognizing that whites can indeed be victims of racism. See, e.g., Bowen v. Missouri Department of Social Services (2002) (racial harassment of white employee by black co-worker); Taxman v. Board of Education (1996) (termination of white teacher instead of black teacher). And the Supreme Court held that racial discrimination against whites by local governments is generally illegal in City of Richmond v. J.A. Croson Co. (1989). Affirmative action can’t be used to justify terminating or harassing an employee.

The Seattle schools’ racist policy, which appears to condone unlawful racial discrimination and retaliation against whites, is on the web site of its Equity and Race Relations department, directed by Caprice Hollins, a politically-correct self-proclaimed multicultural “educator.” Some education.

It appears that the Seattle schools would rather spend their time teaching (and practicing) racism, rather than reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Thanks for the post. I have a little more on the story here:

No, they are not saying that only white people can be racist, they are saying that only those who have the most social power can be racist.

So black people could be racist if they had more social power than white people. Racism is the subdugation by those with most social power of with the least, based on race. Currently, those who have most social power in the US are white.

Don't confuse bigotry with racism. They are NOT the same thing. If a black man said "I hate white people", that is bigotry, possibly caused by prejudice, but it is NOT racism. By definition, it can't be.

They are not critiscising future time orientation (fto) and individualism. What they are saying (as far as I can see) is that the assertion that someone is inferior because they DON'T HAVE such time orientation or individulism is racist.

example: native americans may be considered inferior because they don't think about the future in the same way as white americans do, i.e traditional native americans are present time oriented rather than future time oriented. This is a cultural attribute though, not a racial one as it is percieved.

Another example: a kid from an underpriveledged background (the majority of underpriveledged kids are from ethnic families) might be considered stupid/lazy/uninterested by his/her school teachers because he/she tends to live in the "now" and not think about the future. In reality though, the nature of the kids life, i.e severe financial restrictions means that thinking about the long term future (which requires financial stabililty)is at best difficult, at worst futile. So his/her thoughts and behaviour are present time oriented.

Rather than understanding this, a teacher could easily attribute this "attitude" to race rather than social background.

I think that's what the Seattle Public Schools board is trying to get at. It's not how WE think that is racist, it's what we assume about how OTHERS think that is racist.

you should do your research a little further. I agree with you there are way to many single parent households in the African American community. Lets put a end to this... Lets make fair sure that their are fair laws put on the books that will send the affluent white Bellevue business man or woman caught with their famous white powder to jail for the same amount of time as the black father from the "hood" caught with crack.... lets make sure that white collar crime is not just "paid off"...lets make sure that the white female teacher that has been hired to teach our young black males does not hold a subcouncious fear of them that affects her ability to teach them...she is too afraid to confornt them so instead they are ignored and passed through school with little ability to read... can not get a job and ends up in prison for trying to take hold of the "American so called Dream".....

I do need to go and read the whole website area but a few thoughts.

First, I think the issue of individual versus collective thinking means that some groups emphasize one more than the other. So, if you are a kid who has been raised one way and then get into school and find another way, it may be harder to learn. (That said, we all live in the same country. It seems a little hard to believe that school would be the first time that kids would be exposed to this.)

Second, what you may seem to forget is that we while our country has come a long way, things are still not level. The most obivious thing is the "old 'ole boy" club that works against anyone not white, wealthy or male. Most of the Ivy League schools (and other top universities and colleges) have legacy slots that they'd rather not talk about but exist. They are primarily for wealthy white families. There is a lack of fairness there that words cannot undo.

Last, SPS is just too race obsessed in many senior management areas. Andrew's Dad (who seems to dislike apostrophes but really, they exist) rightly points out that African American Academy is largely failing. (They have made tremendous gains on their 4th grade scores while their 7th grade scores are beyond abysmal and are the worst in SPS.) I don't know why the district created this school but they are not filling what is one of the most beautiful (and newer) buildings in our district. And yet, instead of moving their program into a building they could fit it (if the district deems they should continue), we are building another K-8 just a mile down the room for $65M. That program, New School, should have moved into AAA and saved us the money.

Also, the new superintendent coming in? She's said some inflmammatory stuff both here in and Charleston (where she is coming from). I'm not sure she'll be a great bridge builder.

It's time for the majority people (White people) to act like the MAJORITY people and for the minority people do know their place. You know what, this is the majority peoples land! Don't like it, get out! BTW, Merry Christmas!! Don't like that, move away to Africa or some other hole in the wall and enjoy all the great culture your people have to offer the world! I guess Labor Day and Memorial Day are the two biggest Tortheldrin-Horde wow gold ones -- maybe all of the NPCs could take a day off, there could be giant barbeques set up in the capital cities, or players could take a day to remember those fallen Trollbane-Alliance wow gold in the past wars.
